Happy Kieren

 With his medal

2000

  • First person in history to win 3 consecutive Olympic medals in the 1500m, of any colours (2 gold, 1 silver)
  • Becomes most dominant man in an Olympic swimming event - only the 3rd man in history to win 2 gold and 1 silver in the same Olympic swimming event - both others were in the 100m freestyle, and until Perkins and Popov did it in 2000, no one had achieved the feat since 1924. However of these 3 only Perkins went out still holding the world and Olympic records for his event.

  • Makes his 3rd Olympic team
  • Voted as part of 'all time greatest Olympic team' in 1500 and 400m freestyle by Australian swimming fans.
  • Retires from swimming still holding 3 world records, multiple Olympic, Commonwealth and Australian records...
  • In a special presentation, is held up to the roaring crowd by his teammates while the announcer thanks him on behalf of the Australian swimming team.
  • Is the first swimmer in history to break 15min twice for the 1500 in as many days (14:58.34 in his heat - fastest heat swim in history of the event, 14:53.59 in the final.)
  • One part of the Olympic opening ceremony featured an image of Kieren winning in Atlanta the size of a football field being projected onto the stadium during the song 'Heroes Live Forever.' :)
